The Preservation Of Chinatown Chicago - 1540 Words

Phillip Fok David Walls English 0802 September 16, 2015 The Preservation of Chinatown in Philadelphia In order for Philadelphia to maintain its rich culture and diversity, Chinatown must be preserved. Chinatown has become a centerpiece of Philadelphia for tourist and residents alike to experience eastern culture. The people are friendly, there are plenty of strangers on the streets, and plenty late night business and as Jane Jacobs would describe it, successful (35). Therefore as a public space that is suitable to the public it should be preserved. However, it is the target for many developers. In the past there have been numerous attempts to develop the Chinatown district, all of which would have compromised the integrity of Chinatown, which has been around since the late 1800s. The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation, or the PCDC, was founded because of these threats to Chinatown and has constantly fought off development threats to Chinatown (Lechner). However, the developments that were constructed including the Vine Street Expressway and several urban renewal projec ts south of Chinatown have effectively stopped growth in those areas. Because of limited space and growing population further developments have been shot down rather quickly by residents including the Foxwood Casino and in 2004 the construction of the new Phillies stadium. One of the first of many barrages of developmental destructions of Chinatown was the reconstruction of the Vine Street

Opening Statement Doc Free Essays

Opening Statement Frank Cearnal Jr CRJ 100 November 11, 2012 John Taulane Opening Statement In today’s court system it’s not what you know it’s what you can prove, this statement has assisted me with the choice of discussing the Opening Statement of a Trial. Open statements can be catastrophic in any trial process, I would like to think of opening statements as the seed that initiates doubt in the minds of the jury. Opening Statements are defined as the information presented to the jury by both the prosecution and the defense attorney; solely to advise the jury of what each side intends to prove and how they will provide that information. We will write a custom essay sample on Opening Statement Doc or any similar topic only for you Order Now Opening statements are evidence or verdict, this process allows the prosecution to state what they are going to prove and how their proof relates to the case. For example the prosecutions opening statement would be: my intentions here today is to prove that the stand accused did in fact commit the nature of these crimes with the thought of consequence, lack of neither concern nor consideration for others. Today intend to prove that the nature of the crimes were in fact committed by the suspect at hand and at the time of the crime they were in their right frame of mind and should be found guilty of all crimes committed. This is also an excellent time for the prosecution to indirectly character assassinate without it directly being pointed at the defendant. I feel that the prosecution has the upper hand in any opening statement because they have all the words, and knowledge of putting those stereo-types and judgments into the jury’s head what sticks out the most is the defendant is already presumed guilty by the public because they even committed a crime. The law plainly states that a person is innocent until found guilty, it’s sad that society already has their verdict based on being a criminal period. In an opening statement the defense attorney’s job would be to defend their client to the best of their ability, their main goal is to dismiss any statement that the prosecution has presented to prove their evidence. An example of a defense attorney would be solely to discredit the prosecutions opening statement. The defense attorney would state that there client didn’t in fact commit the crime that they have been accused of, that their client is innocent until the prosecution can prove otherwise. Also during the defense opening statement they would high lite the excellent qualities of the defendant; stating their qualities in the community, education, employment status. Most importantly they would state how they prosecution has no real evidence on the defendant and how they will dismiss the prosecutions accusations. The opening statements are the foot work for presenting the evidence in a trial; this gives the jury the opportunity to process both sides of the opening statement in conjunction with the evidence that will be presented to be able to provide a verdict of guilty or not guilty. It amazes me how the trial process starts with the first initial process of the trial initiation and proceeds to the end result or a verdict, this process reminds me of so many anonymous 12 step program. You can complete one process before the other, the first process has to be initiated and then move to the next the processes all follow each other. They were formulated one before the other to make the process as correct and successful as possible. Explore Shakespeares Introduction of Romeo in Act I of Romeo and Juliet Essay Example For Students

Explore Shakespeares Introduction of  Romeo in Act I of Romeo and Juliet Essay In the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare builds up a vivid portrayal of Romeo to his audience during Act I by gradually developing his character. At the beginning of the play Romeo is illustrated as isolated and a character who seems to be wallowing in his misery. Shakespeare conveys this to the audience by manipulating Romeos language and making it packed with hyperbole, imagery and oxymoron. Additionally Romeo while in the middle of speaking breaks down and has to think, perhaps Shakespeare is suggesting that his use of elaborate language does not come naturally to him and thus the audience can conclude that Romeo is merely acting. In the last scene of the Act I Romeo behaves in a very different manner contrary to how he was conveyed in the previous scene, when Romeo first sees Juliet he proclaims a speech about her beauty, the way in which he expresses this love is much more externally focused than previously, suggesting that the love is genuine. Upon meeting for the first time they share a sonnet, for an Elizabethan this would suggest a pure, authentic love. Shakespeare also uses fate to subtlety suggest to the audience that Romeo is being truthful in his affection for Juliet; in the prologue Shakespeare writes a pair of star-crossed lovers this suggests to the audience that Romeo and Juliet are destined to be together, Shakespeare also in Act I often refers to fate implying that the couple are destined to meet. It is imperative that Shakespeare introduces Romeo as a character that the audience are concerned about and that they believe that his love for Juliet will eventually be pure and authentic, it is not tremendously important that Romeo is completely faithful, genuine and committed in his love for Juliet soon as the couple meet but rather that the relationship will develop throughout the whole play otherwise the consequent major events later on in the play will be meaningless. Contemporary Elizabethan audiences were used to hearing a play rather than watching one, this meant that they would be much more aware of the language that Shakespeare used, they would be more likely to detect changes in rhyme scheme and variations in characters use of language, Shakespeare even writes in the prologue to Henry V, Gently to hear, kindly to judge our play the likely reason for this is that society was a lot less visual than todays society since the did not have the television or films and the theatr e was relatively new to them. Shakespeare creates an explicit atmosphere of hatred and conflict right from the opening scene; perhaps he does this in order to juxtapose the character of Romeo with the world surrounding him. By contrasting Romeos behaviour to the environment in which the play is set, Shakespeare is able to highlight the difference he has with the rest of society and his solitary demeanour to the audience. The opening dialogue of the Capulets servants portrays to the audience the violent and aggressive atmosphere and how much they detest the Montague household, Sampson states that he wishes to fight with the men and then rather crudely abuse the women I will push Montagues men from the wall and thrust his maids to the wall. From this dialogue the audience learn to what extent the two opposing families despise each other. Shakespeare then introduces an enormous brawl in the city, as the Capulets and Montagues fight with each other; Tybalt a very aggressive individual exclaims talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues and thee. This reemphasizes to the audience the intense hatred both parties have for each other .In the first scene a very vicious world full of hate is introduced and the audience is possibly rather astonished at how bad the situation has become. Additionally because of this scene the audience have a brief understanding of the atmosphere in Verona, maybe Shakespeare did this in order to give the audience a better insight into Romeos behaviour because if they comprehend the world surrounding him they are more likely to emphasise with his actions and point of view. Furthermore the environment of tension and hatred is particularly imperative because at the end of Act V when the Montagues and Capulets reconcile, there has to be a significant transformation of the attitudes that the two families have for each other due to their childrens death for the play to be meaningful. The first mention of Romeo in the scene is in ll-115 when Lady Montague his mother says, O where is Romeo? Saw you him today? Right, glad I am he was not at this fray. The use of the interjection O shows the audience the deep concern Romeos mother has for him, the fact that even his own mother does not know where he is provides an initial impression to the audience that Romeo is an isolated child. Lady Montague also expresses her delight that Romeo was not at the brawl, this could possibly mean that he is usually attending these fights and also delivers the audience a subtle hint that Romeo is perhaps acting unusually or different from his normal character. His fathers monologue conveys a portrait of a very solitary child; he gives a quite detailed description of how miserable and secluded his son has become, he says about his son tears augmenting the fresh mornings dew, his deep sighs, private in his chamber pens himself and shuts up his windows locking fair daylight out. This speech builds up a disturbing presentation of the character of Romeo. The audience would most probably be thinking of a child who is melancholy, his fathers words private in his chamber pens himself gives a description of a child who cannot bear the presence of others and phrases such as black and portentous illustrates to the audience someone who is completely miserable and despondent. From Montagues speech Shakespeare is strongly suggesting to the audience that Romeo is a very troubled state of mind. Romeo And Juliet Literary Analysis EssaySome of the events in the play appear to have happened by chance alone, for example Romeo only finds out about the Capulets feast because he happens to come across Peter, a servant who cannot read, as he is looking for someone to interpret the invitation for the Capulet ball for him. The use of fate could be criticised by a modern audience however a contemporary Elizabethan audience would be far less sceptical about this because many believed in fate, destiny and the importance of stars. The fact that contemporary audience would be less critical of superstition could also justify Romeos reasoning when he says that he does not want to go to the Caplet ball because he had a dream the night before that warned him not to go, I dreamt a dream tonight. In Act I sc 5, when Romeo first sees Juliet he proclaims in a monologue his love for her. However can we believe the veracity of his love? This question can be argued for from both perspectives. Some might think that this love is not at all genuine they could argue that antithesis is still being used, a snowy dove trooping with crows to show that he sees Juliet as beautiful compared to everyone else, the antithesis could prove that he is just pretending and they could also dispute that Romeo is in love with her just because of her outward appearance I neer saw true beauty till this night since he has not actually spoken to her yet. However the audience care a lot about this moment; they want to believe that his love is in fact true love, Shakespeare creates dramatic irony here from the prologue, and the viewers already know that they will fall in love. A final point they could make is that in the first scene Romeo had to stop and think in the middle of his speech however in this monologue it is spontaneous proving that the love is genuine. Very shortly after this scene of love, Tybalt becomes enraged that a Montague is at the Capulet ball and wants to make a scene; once again Shakespeare contrasts a scene of Romeos character and love to a scene of conflict and hate in order to emphasize Romeos behaviour in comparison to the world around him. When Romeo and Juliet first meet some might argue that the love they have for one another is sincere and authentic Shakespeare conveys this by making the pair share a sonnet; this is tremendously significant because in Shakespeares time Sonnets were exceedingly popular. Poets across England would use them (including Shakespeare who himself wrote a long series of Sonnets). They were usually used to powerfully express a feeling of overwhelming love the poet conveyed in his Sonnet the emotions that being in a deep love would awaken within him. Often in a Sonnet there would be a conceit, which is an extended metaphor that runs throughout, in this particular case Romeo, and Juliet use religion as a conceit. Sonnets were made up of twelve lines of iambic pentameter in an ABAB rhyme scheme then the last two lines would be a rhyming couplet. Upon hearing the first quatrain the contemporary audience would be alerted that it was a Sonnet because they were so familiar with its structure. Both Romeo and Juliet share in the Sonnet and are still able to form it together perfectly and respond to each others imagery; Shakespeare uses this as a tool to portray to the strong bond the couple have. However another view is often taken: some think that it is not necessarily essential that the love they have for each other is completely pure and genuine right from the beginning of their relationship, however it is crucial that their love for one another will develop through the course of the play. The most important thing is that towards the end of the play Shakespeare conveys to the audience a love which is indisputably pure and genuine. In conclusion, Romeos character develops during the first act; Shakespeare initially portrays him as an isolated individual who almost enjoys wallowing in grief, this is evident to the audience because of the way in which Shakespeare manipulates Romeos language. He uses poetic devices such as hyperbole, metaphor and antithesis, what makes it clear to the audience that Romeo is merely acting is how he stops to think in the middle of speech. This illustration of a despondent and miserable Romeo continues until near the end of the act. Contrasting the initial impression of him in the last scene of the act the audience observe a different Romeo, although he still possesses some of the character traits that were found in the first scene such as antithesis and exaggeration in his language, his overall disposition has changed. The style in which he expresses his love is much more focused on Juliet rather than himself as observed in the first scene, his temperament is much more joyful than e ver before in the act and other elements in his presentation during Act I sc 5 convey this to the audience. The preliminary introduction of Romeo exemplifies to the audience a rather disagreeable character however his temperament slowly becomes more content and by the end of the Act I upon his first sighting of Romeo is portrayed as overjoyed in his new love.

First-Year Residency Requirements for College

First-Year Residency Requirements for College At many colleges and universities, you will need to live in the residence halls for your first year or two of college. A few schools require campus residency for all four years. Even if your school allows students to live off campus, consider the pros and cons of living on campus before making a final decision. Why Youre Required to Live on Campus Your First Year of College Students are most likely to stay at a college when they feel like they belong. This sense of belonging has a direct impact on a colleges retention rate and graduation rate. When new students live off campus, they are less likely to get involved in campus clubs and activities and will have a harder time making friends among fellow students. When a student lives on campus, the college has an easier time helping out should that student encounter trouble on the academic or social front. Resident Advisors (RAs) and Resident Directors (RDs) are trained to intervene and assist when students are struggling, and they can help direct students to the appropriate people and resources on campus.A college education is about much more than taking classes and earning a degree. Residential life teaches many important life skills: resolving conflicts with a roommate, suitemates, and/or students on your hall; learning to live with people who may be quite different from you; building a living and learnin g community; and so on. At most schools, campus residence halls are much closer to important facilities (library, gym, health center, etc.) than off-campus apartments.Colleges have little ability to monitor illegal behavior off campus, but within the residence halls, activities such as underage drinking and illegal drug use can be detected and responded to much more readily.  When you are a new student, it can be a huge benefit to be living in the same building with upper-class students and/or RAs who know the campus and academic expectations well. Youre also more likely to find mentors in a campus residence hall than in an off-campus apartment.Along with having upper-class mentors, youll also have a peer group that will include students taking some of the same classes as you. Living on campus gives you ready access to study groups, and peers can often help if you are forced to miss a class or if you find material from a lecture confusing. Along with the obvious benefits of living on campus, colleges have a few reasons for keeping students on campus that may be a bit less altruistic. Specifically, colleges dont make all of their money from tuition dollars. For the great majority of schools, significant revenues also flow from room and board charges. If dorm rooms sit empty and not enough students are signed up for meal plans, the college will have a harder time balancing its budget. If more states move forward with free tuition plans for in-state students at public universities (such as New Yorks Excelsior Program), all college revenue will come from room, board, and associated fees. Exceptions to College Residency Requirements Keep in mind that very few colleges have residential policies that are set in stone, and exceptions are often made. If your family lives very close to the college, you can often get permission to live at home. Doing so obviously has significant cost benefits, but dont lose sight of the valuable experiences you might miss out on by choosing to commute. By living at home, you wont be getting the full college experience, including learning how to be independent. Some colleges with two- or three-year residency requirements allow strong students to petition to live off campus sooner. If youve proven your academic and personal maturity, you may be able to move off campus earlier than many of your classmates. At some schools, it may also be possible to petition to live off campus for reasons related to specific health and wellness needs. For example, you might be able to petition to live off campus if the college cant meet your atypical dietary requirements or if you need access to regular healthcare that simply isnt feasible in a college residence hall.   A Final Word About Residency Requirements Every college has residency requirements that were developed for the unique situation of the school. Youll find that some urban schools as well as some universities that have been experiencing rapid expansion, simply dont have enough dormitory space to handle all of their students. Such schools often cannot guarantee housing and may be happy for you to live off campus. At any school, its important to weigh the pros and cons of living off campus before making a decision. Time spent cooking meals and commuting to campus is time that wont be spent on your studies, and not all students do well with too much independence.

Good practice in Teaching and Learning English in English medium and Research Proposal

Good practice in Teaching and Learning English in English medium and Chinese medium schools - Research Proposal Example â€Å"Language learning activities are representative of the diverse social and cultural background knowledge and experience of learners. Language learning activities provide learners the opportunities to assess and negotiate knowledge, concepts and ideas in the light of their own socio-cultural backgrounds† (Ajayi, p.8) The above facts forced non-native English speaking nations to encourage the learning of English by implementing it in their curriculum. â€Å"The need for a common international language with the expansion of a global communication network has made the English the language of choice† (TESOL& Dang, p.9) Postgraduate classes from grades 2001 to 2004 at Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing were assigned to study English for Technical Communication, a course that integrated the concepts of technical communication into English for specific purposes. In the survey of Grade 2004, over 96% of the graduates claimed that it was necessary for them to study English for Technical Communication; more than 90% of the students confirmed that the course was practical; and 90% of them claimed that the course had significantly improved their abilities in technical communication. Therefore, introducing technical communication in English for specific purposes would be a feasible way to develop the teaching of technical communication in China. (Duan et al) Even the communist China, started to encourage the learning of English. They have realized the limitations of Chinese language at international level and realized the importance of English for the smooth communication purposes at international level. English learning is not easy for no-native English speakers. Proper teaching strategies are essential for Learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) especially in China like non-native English speaking countries. Social, cultural and economic factors can affect the teaching and learning of English for

Application of theories of psycology, sociology in the context of Essay

Application of theories of psycology, sociology in the context of (UK)paramedic practice - Essay Example Advanced training for the extension of roles of paramedical professionals is essential (DoH (c), 2001), with training and education in skills needed for assessment and treatment of conditions among the elderly such as wounds, fractures, cervical spine injury and stroke, in the community setting (Mason et al, 2003). They thus reduce the National Health Service’s (NHS) problem of increasing expenditure on emergency medical admissions (Gray & Walker, 2008). New initiatives need to be developed to improve the assessment of elderly patients (DoH (a), 2001; DoH (b), 2001). Ambulance Mrs. Thomas is a frail old lady of eighty years. She fell down, when her ankle twisted unexpectedly, causing severe pain in her left hip, which took her weight during the fall. She could not be moved to her bed. Her spouse dialled 999 and asked for paramedics to attend to her urgently. In this case, paramedics arrived quickly, and gently shifted her on to a stretcher, from where she was transferred to her bed. Using their knowledge and experience about hip fractures in the elderly, including a sprained ankle, the paramedics decided to immobilize her hip and support her ankle, while administering her a pain killer. Integrated decision making with a multidimensional team helped them decide to provide medical treatment and nursing care in the home setting, without hospital admission. Knowledge which is linked to power is a sociological theory, based on knowledge having the power to have an effect on individuals, or more generally on society (Adams & Sydie, 2001). In the context of paramedic practice, a combination of both theory and practice are used in the exercise of judgment related to emergency medical cases, termed as â€Å"knowledge invested in action† (Dunne, 1999: 707; Hager, 2000). An important theory that is applicable to paramedics’ work in relation to judgment, decision making and application

Love Brief state v stark - Case Study Example Proceeding: The proceeding can be correctly categorized into multiple counts; for the first of these Stark was found to be guilty and hence charged to a total of one twenty months or ten years. As far as the second and third counts are concerned through a bench trail Stark was found guilty and then charged for a duration of ten years with an additional consecutive forty three months. Issue: There are certain area’s of concern as far as this case is concerned. The first line of argument is that of Starks intentions; more specifically that of his actions being solely carried out with the objective of causing bodily harm. Another issue is that of the courts specified sentence, which 120 months only for the first count. A question that rises here is whether the sole reason for this specified sentence was based purely on future dangerousness of Stark’s actions. Holding: The ruling of the case was based primarily on the specific dictations by law which holds an individual responsible for his actions, which are intended to do bodily harm to another person, making him guilty of second degree assault. Stark’s careless behavior and reckless actions that transmit or expose other individuals to HIV do just that. Reasoning: Stark’s conviction was based on the availability of evidence that can easily be concerned as sufficient to establish intent. Testimonies from the victims, Stark’s neighborhood friends as well as his doctor and nurse all pointed towards his consciously aware reckless behavior and intent to do harm. Stark clearly stated in one of reported conversation â€Å"I don’t care. If I’m going to die, everybody’s going to die† leaving no room for doubt of his intentions and hence making an appropriate court sentence inevitable. Prior to this case, other cases such as, Commonwealth v. Brown and State v. Haines can be analyzed to find that similar sentences were given for comparable crimes by

Movie Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard Film Studies Essay

Movie Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard Film Studies Essay Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy wilder in 1950, is considered to be the greatest film about Hollywood ever put on celluloid by Hollywood. It is a classic black comedy/drama, and perhaps the most acclaimed, but darkest film noir story about behind the scenes Hollywood. Some people describe it as the black pearl of film noir: a macabre movie whose decadent glamour and despair are memorably haunting. The movie combines melodrama and film noir to give us a deliciously scathing satire on the movie making industry. This is why it is still regarded as a landmark of American cinema, even though it has been more than a half century since it was produced. While this film is both entertaining and striking, it is a sad tale of deception, greed, and jealousy. It begins and ends with a dead man floating in the pool of a crumbling old mansion. This movie not only pokes fun at old Hollywood, but also broke new ground with techniques never used before in film. From its legendary opening shot of a man floating dead in a swimming pool, Sunset Boulevard seizes our attention and doesnt let go until its equally famous closing shot. In fact, the movie opens with a jolt: the bullet-riddled body of a young man is seen floating face down in the pool next to a mansion. Then the ghostly voice of Joe Gillis recounts the events leading up to his death, which are shown in flashback until ending with the final scene: A completely deranged Norma Desmond descending a staircase in front of newsreel cameras. She is once again in the spotlight, even if she is unable to comprehend why, and Max, who is positioning the cameras, is directing her for one final time. Despite their apparent differences, Joe and Norma are two of a kind both are vain mediocrities who think they are better than what they are, and who seriously believe that they are destined for a better future, but they are obviously doomed. Sunset Boulevard is a movie made in Hollywood that is about making movies in Hollywood, this is why it is self referential. It critiques Hollywoods star system. In fact, the main female character of the film (Norma Desmond) plays a washed up actress from the silent age of Hollywood. She lives in a world of delusion where her fans still remember her, and where her old director Cecil B. DeMille will produce the wretched script that she is writing. Her eccentric behavior and her neurotic tendencies seem to know no limits. In this main female character the movie exposes a sad picture of the dark side of the star system: The star system exploits an artists skill, but when that actor or actress becomes obsolete, or lose their appeal to the public, the system would cut them free. At the end of the movie, she commits murder to protect her fantasy. This film expresses a cynical attitude toward Hollywood, by showing the main character of the film face down in his dream pool; killed, in a roundabout way by the Hollywood system. The dead man, we find out, is Joe Gillis, a Hollywood script writer, and also the narrator of this tale. Then Gillis takes us on a journey of how he got there through bad creditors, a car chase, a dead monkey and a very well timed landing at the home of Norma Desmond.   With that, the film can be seen as a look at the writer and the game of writing and filmmaking in Hollywood. It depicts a lack of respect for the art of writing, and the lack of humanity in the Hollywood system. From a technical standpoint, Sunset Boulevard is not a ground-breaking film, but Wilder uses the films visual elements to good effect. Normas mansion is shown in all of its crumbling, gothic glory, as well as the fishs eye shot of Joe in the pool. These are memorable moments that give the movie a special characteristic that makes it different from others, without forgetting the perfect musical accompaniment. The acting is flawless, with each actor fully inhabiting the skin of his or her character. And the camera work and music are effortlessly wed to the projects other aspects. The movie represents the center stone in Billy Wilders glittering cinematic tiara. Finally, we can say that Sunset Boulevard is a prototype of film noir. And no other motion picture about Hollywood comes near Billy Wilders searing, uncompromising and utterly fascinating portrait of the film community. That is why there has never been or will there ever be another movie like Sunset Boulevard in all of cinemas history.

Compare and Contrast Rupert Brookes The Solider with Wilfred Owens Du

Compare and Contrast Rupert Brooke's The Solider with Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum Est. Although 'The Soldier' by Rupert Brooke and 'Dulce et Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen are concerned with the common theme of war, the two poems contrast two very different views of war. 'The Soldier' gives a very positive view of war, whereas Owen's portrayal is negative to the extreme. Rupert Brooke's 'The Soldier' is very patriotic as Brooke loves his country and is ready to die for it. This perhaps is not surprising as it was written in the first few months of war when the whole country was swept by a tide of patriotic fervour. Rather ironically for a war poem 'The Soldier' is a peaceful poem, as it doesn't describe the blood and death of war like 'Dulce et Decorum Est.'. Brooke's love for his country, however, is somewhat jingoistic and his view of England is rather sentimental. There are many examples of his love for his country, one of which is 'A body of England's, breathing English air.' Brooke also thinks that his country is superior to any other land: 'a richer dust concealed '. To an outsider this is a rather conceited view; thinking that an Englishman's rotting corpse would act as some superior fertilizer. But to his patriotic readers, this only intensified his main arguing point; his conviction that England is worth dying for. Brooke's purpose for writing such a one-sided poem was to give a morale booster to his audience and to demonstrate his deep love for his country. The poem is very powerful and no doubt had a very positive effect on these reluctant to join the army. The poem effectively demonstrates that this is a cause and country undoubtedly worth fighting for. Brooke's belief that God is... ...some of the best anti-war poetry ever written. Looking back over time, we can easily be critical of Brooke's rather naÃÆ'Â ¯ve view of war. But to be fair, he could not know what the next three years of war would bring and was only reflecting the patriotic mood of the early months of war. His view is much influenced by the Victorian poets, such as Tennyson, whose 'Charge of the Light Brigade' saw war as romantic and glorious with valiant cavalrymen charging the enemy on horses. But the First World War was to change all that. This was a twentieth century war with aeroplanes, machine-guns, tanks and gas, which Owen witnessed at first-hand and through his pen, changed not only war poetry, but how future generations have thought about war and the horrors it brings: And watch the white eyes writhing in his face. His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin.

How does the filming help to make ‘The Shining’ an exceptional Horror movie? Essay

Stanley Kubrick a.k.a. â€Å"The Master Filmmaker,† was born on July 26, 1928 in the Bronx, New York City. By age 13 he had developed passions for jazz, drumming, chess and photography. In 1951 at 23 years of age, Kubrick used his savings to finance his first film, a 16-minute documentary short about boxer Walter Cartier. On March 7th, 1999, Stanley Kubrick died in his sleep of a heart attack. He was 70 years old. The Shining is a typical example of the horror genre because it works by arousing irrational fear. Stanley Kubrick uses step down imagery to make the terror in the horror, controlled and not too over whelming for the audience, to make it seem more believable. The horror is a paradox because it presents a vision of terror to the audience but the audience try to fight everything the director is trying to achieve by telling themselves that, ‘it is just a movie, its not real, you can’t scare me.’ The Shining was based on Stephen King’s third published novel, which became a best seller upon its release in 1977. What also makes The Shining such an exceptional horror movie is the way Stanley Kubrick keeps the horror hidden from the audience and like most good horror films, there is always a sense of the supernatural, good vs. evil and a sense of isolation. Personally I feel that the Shining is a typical horror film because it’s a situation where the victims are isolated from the outside world and there is a mad man or something out of the ordinary killing them, which is true of most horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street, The Ring, Signs, Jeepers Creeper’s 1 and 2 and Dracula. The camera at the start of the film is moving over a huge mountain pass. We are shown a tiny Volkswagen car driving down a road, the film has many of the most beautiful, atmospheric cinematography, by John Alcott. This scene gives the impression of man’s vulnerability, when seen against the massive powers of nature – a sense of ‘the other’ is also created here by the aerial photography – a dark power looking down on the tiny ‘beetle’. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is attending a job interview for the position of a winter caretaker at The Overlook Hotel, located in the rockies of Colorado, built on an Indian burial ground. At the beginning of this film Jack conducts himself as a calm, charming man. He goes for the interview looking smart wearing a collar and a tie, shaven and looking very confident. During his interview the camera is films from behind Jack, making it seem as though someone or something is watching Jack – a sense of the ‘other’ and there are some frontal shots in which the background is peach, soft and warm. This presents a comforting, secure atmosphere. As the movie builds up we begin to release that the Overlook Hotel is not just any other normal Hotel but haunted although the horror is kept hidden from us we just see parts of the supernatural, although as we discover through the movie that this is much more than a mere haunted house tale. One of the things that makes it so interesting is that it shows a wide variety of elements that lead to Jack’s insanity to the point that we are left with the question on our minds whether it really was the house that leads to Jack’s insanity or the isolation for six months, so far from the outside world or Jack’s own psychological make-up or even reincarnation. We are also told very early in the film, that the hotel has something of a ‘history,’ in summary, some years previously, a crazed-psycho (the ex-caretaker) killed his wife and two children by chopping them up into small pieces with an axe! But once the family settle into the caretaker lifestyle it turns out that Torrance’s wife does most of the ‘caretaking’ while her grouchy husband seeks inspiration for a novel he is writing. At first everything goes well but as time goes by, he gets increasingly frustrated with his failure to write and takes it out on his wife (Shelly Duvall). Slowly, Jack begins to change he becomes pale, his clothes become rougher looking more like a labourer and becomes more and more irritable & malevolent towards both his wife and son. In the background, their son played by Danny Lloyd also starts having problems of his very own when he starts receiving psychic visions (E.S.P) of twin girls who were murdered a couple of years ago by their father who was also the caretaker at the Hotel and there are warnings from Tony of ‘redrum’ which spells murder when you read it backwards. It is clear that both Jack and Danny have some form of psychic gift as they are both able to pick-up the Hotel’s own psychic emissions of the horrors that it has seen. The down side is that the visions end up making Jack, go insane. Throughout the movie, the camera follows the action like someone is watching (presence in the Hotel) and there is always a sense of claustrophobia, For example when Danny is cycling in the corridors and he meets the two murdered girls, the camera when he meets them zooms to his face then back to the girls four times and gets closer with each shot then a close up again to Danny then a close up of the girls’ dead bodies four times but not for long so that the audience probably would not find it sickening. We know that the twin girls are ghosts because there is an axe on the floor and blood, and when talking to Danny they use repetition, â€Å"Come and play with us, for ever and ever and ever† which is the Lord’s Prayer. After that scene Jack sees a vision of a lift and when the doors open blood flows like a river, Personally I felt that this was technically clever because it emphasis on the horror aspect. The scariest moment in the movie is when Jack has gone completely insane and is trying to â€Å"correct† his wife and son because he had no real idea what his job as the caretaker there was really till Mr Grady (ex-caretaker) had told him to kill his family because they were trying to damage the house and that his son had brought a coloured cook into the house, the climax of the scariest point is when Jack says â€Å"Here’s Johnny† which was rated scariest horror scene out of hundred horror films. This is clever as it uses comedy to make the tragedy seem even more horrific. The end scene is a shot of Jack, frost-bitten and dead in the snow apparently hours later, is a satisfying and scary ending. But Stanley Kubrick delivers an ultimate conclusion, which Stephen King could never have achieved in his novel. The haunting music begins again, the camera sweeps to a framed photo on the wall, and we see a portrait of a ballroom party from decades ago. After the camera zooms in thrice, Jack is seen in the centre of the photo, and the caption reads, â€Å"Overlook Hotel, 1921.† This caption indicates that Jack, or at least his spirit, has always been present in the Overlook Hotel. Kubrick brilliantly arranges each shot in the film so that the viewer is easily drawn into the story. There is no single scene, shot, or camera angle, which does not denote a deeper meaning or have symbolic value. This movie is perhaps Stanley Kubrick’s greatest work. I feel that this movie could not have had a better cast, and there is nowhere else in the world where this movie could have been set. I feel that Jack Nicholson’s performance in The Shining was absolutely stunning. I also feel that without Jack Nicholson, â€Å"The Shining† would have been just another haunted house film. Jack Nicholson’s depiction of a man teetering on the brink of insanity was brilliant. We watch in terror as the insanity slowly settles in and exploding fiercely into this man, transforming him from one who is trying to repair his fragile family life into a stark raving lunatic bent on destroying everything he loves. It is truly a magical movie experience. So I feel that The Shining really is the greatest horror movie ever made.

Progressivism in the United States

Progressivism in the United States took place in the period between the Spanish-American War and the entry of the United States into the great World War. It was a time for change in America in all walks of life, as well as a time for reform. It was marked by Theodore Roosevelts 7 and a half years in office, the Rough Rider put it upon himself to make the first strides towards reform. These reforms included the cracking down on illegal monopolies and so forth. During this era large cities transformed into large metropolises, small towns into large cities and new towns sprang up nearly everywhere. Reforms also included the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth amendments. The progressive era really had significant impact in Americas history. The progressive movement had many origins. One of these was the battle against governmental corruption and inability, in other words a struggle for civil services reform. The progressive movement was initiated by liberals in both political parties, the fight for government reform can be traced back to Liberal Republicans(An Oxymoron, Mr. Jetel?) during the Grant administration and Mugwumps. Citizens were enraged, with big businesses growing influence in all branches of government and sought ways to purify it. Big Business was also a target of progressivism. During this time presidents like Roosevelt and William Howard Taft tried to regulate and control big business. Many well educated people of the time, as well as moderately prosperous businessmen and members of other professions(middle class) felt threatened by the increasing power of big business and the tycoons. These people were also disturbed by the Big business influence in politics, making a mockery of the democratic system. Then with the failure of the interstate commerce act and the Sherman act, made big business look unstoppable. As...

Chinese Overpopulation Problem essays

Chinese Overpopulation Problem essays On a sunny weekend afternoon on the playgrounds and crowded shopping streets of China, all is utterly normal, including a sight that would seem bizarre and mysterious anywhere else in the world. Among the children playing or walking with their parents, there is not a brother or sister to be seen. This is the simple but profound effect of China's one-child policy; the government's desperate, long-running experiment in population control and social engineering dealing with the use of birth-control, oral contraceptives, and family planning. China's actions in implementing the one-child policy laws are due to the obvious overpopulation in their country, an issue that is seriously threatening the future of its people. Though they go against traditional Chinese custom, China's harsh policies of population control are indeed justified. Overcrowding almost always results in the ecological problems China is facing. Sadly, not only have people created many of the earth's existing environmental struggles, like pollution, but also, they become the victims of it as well. Though many do not realize it, the environment plays a huge role in society. It deals with everything from the heat that the sun provides, to the food that ends up on the table for dinner. Overpopulation shows an extreme potential in damage to Earth's environment. The quality of air and resources in cities, like the ones in China, are especially fragile due to the extreme number of factories, different businesses, and cars that pollute the air. "China's crisis is that it is the world's most populous nation, supporting twenty-two percent of the world's people on about seven percent of it's arable land" (Lev, Michael. Chicago Tribune.com. May 1,2000. p. 3). So many people in a limited space of land consume more food than the land can offer. They look to other resources for food and water and speed the process of growing crops by Evans ...

The Interest Rating to Develop a Theory of Liquidity Preference Essay

The Interest Rating to Develop a Theory of Liquidity Preference - Essay Example When the economy is doing well, the corporate cash flows rise above what is required to pay the debt off. This leads to speculative euphoria where this act of borrowing and lending goes on and reaches a point where the borrowers are no longer able to pay off the debt. As borrowers are no longer able to pay back, it leads to financial crises where banks do not have liquidity. As a result of the borrowers’ default, banks further tighten their lending, which means that even deserving borrowers that could pay back do not get access to capital in such circumstances. According to Minsky, these swings are a part of a free market economy and cannot be avoided unless there is the provision of a government enforced the regulation. Mishkin, on the other hand, focused on the role of asymmetric information in the financial system. This essentially means that one party in the transaction has less information than the other party. For example, a lender is not aware of the potential ways in which the borrower is going to use the money, but in case the money is lost, it is always the lender who is at the losing end. This asymmetric information creates two problems, namely the adverse selection and the moral hazard. Adverse selection is a trend in which lenders choose borrowers who can pay a higher interest, knowing that they can pay higher interest because their business is riskier and hence there is a greater chance of losing the money on the part of the lender. The interest rate on such investments is quite exaggerated to reflect the risk premium. Moral hazard occurs when the borrowers may choose to invest the money in activities that are undesirable from the lenders’ point of view or else they simply do not work. As this loss is to be borne by the lenders, they will refrain from lending thus causing a financial crisis. Mishkin concentrates on interest rates to develop a theory of liquidity  preference.

Direct and e-Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Direct and e-Marketing - Essay Example One of the basic principles of the Direct Marketing is usage of a database for storing personal customer data and their purchase history. Roll notes that fundamental benefit to the business is that you are able to treat your existing customers in a different way to new prospects and thus create loyalty and maximize profitability. (Roll 2003) So the main purpose of the Direct and e-Marketing for Les Cadeaux Gourmets is to carry out an active strategy and to get more sales from the returned customers. Customer lifetime value (also variously referred to as lifetime customer value or just lifetime value, and abbreviated CLV, LCV, or LTV) is a marketing metric that projects the value of a customer over the entire history of that customer's relationship with a company. Use of customer lifetime value as a marketing metric tends to place greater emphasis on customer service and long-term customer satisfaction, rather than on maximizing short-term sales. (Wikipedia). As Les Cadeaux Gourmets spend some money for advertisement to attract a number of customers, it would be unreasoned to loose them. Calculating customer lifetime value will help company to know exactly how much each customer is worth in dollar terms and therefore exactly how much a marketing department should be willing to spend to acquire each customer. Thus it would be possible to range customers from the most profitable to the least ones and to concentrate the company's efforts on the most profitable customers. Use of customer lifetime value can also help to predict what customers will buy over years. For example, if Mary Smith buys a toy for a 4-year baby in 2005, she will probably order a toy for a 5-year baby in 2006. If Mr. Jones buys bath & body care pieces in March three years in a row, it's possible to make a conclusion that he makes presents for the birthday of his wife and send offering with new products to him in the next March. So Les Cadeaux Gourmets should truck its customers' purchases and use them for planning its advertising campaign. Also the company should monitor customers' responses over time for as long as the relationship with them lasts. Geodemographic profiling uses detailed information based on postcode to match differing lifestyle profiles to the customer database. Postcodes do not resolve down to individual addresses but provide pretty good targeting. Les Cadeaux Gourmets can use geodemographic division of customers into some categories and then offer its goods to each specific category. For example, customers ranking by nationality allows taking into consideration national traditions. Les Cadeaux Gourmets can congratulate customers from Israel with Hanukah, customers from the Middle East with Ramadan and wish other customers Merry Christmas. As a result of this national-specific proposals could be sent to each category. Use of external database with information about postcodes and countries also allows choosing seasonal proposals: in winter there is cold in the US and hot in Australia. Les Cadeaux Gourmets can use this information for advertising of clothes and other season-specific goods. Special databases cover such categories as consumer expenditure, crime statistics, business and employment, and many others. One of the more powerful special databases is called a segmentation system. A segmentation system is useful because it allows users to add another dimension by displaying lifestyle clusters

Fidel Castro Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Fidel Castro - Essay Example Castro chose law as his field and entered the University of Havana for his degree in law. It was in this university that he became involved in politics. In 1947 he entered the group of Eduardo Chibas known as Partido Ortodoxo which was involved in the process of explaining the corruption that was prevalent in Cuba and it stress upon developing independence in Cuba from foreign intervention in the issues of the country particularly the involvement of the United States. Though Chibas was not successful in his mission and he shot himself because of his failure to win elections, Castro was inspired by him and worked on his principles. Castro got married in 1948 to Mirta Diaz Balart who belonged to a very rich family. Though, he received an exposure to the elite and political figures through this marriage but it did not prove to be a successful marriage and he separated from his wife in 1955. Castro completed his education in 1950 and started practicing law and at the same time became politically active. He had very high hopes of achievement in the upcoming elections and expected himself to be elected in the parliament in 1952. But events took a different turn when General Fulgencio Batista formed a coup against Carlos Prà o Socarrà ¡s who was the then ruling president and took over and suspended the upcoming elections. Batista was very influential. He legalized his actions with the United States with the help of his sources and started dictating the land of Cuba. Castro stopped his law practice and directed himself entirely towards politics. Fidel Castro and other members of the Partido Ortodoxo party who were looking forward to elections were disappointed with this action. This group revolted against the government by attacking Moncada Barracks on July 26 1953 but they were unsuccessful. Most of them were killed and Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro were given sentences of 15 years of imprisonment. Castro was released two years later only. Castro was

Should We Pay College Athletes Essay Example for Free

Should We Pay College Athletes Essay Should we pay college athletes? That is a big topic in NCAA sports right now. People think that college athletes work hard and that they deserve to get paid. Michael Wilbon is one of these people. At first he was against paying college athletes, but now he is all for it. He says that he is interested in seeing the people that make revenue share a little piece of it. Then you have people like a reporter from the Daily Evergreen. He is against paying the athletes. He states that when you are a student athlete it is student first and athlete second, and that if you start paying college athletes it will put being an athlete first. I strongly think that college athletes shouldn’t be paid for playing sports in college. Paying players to play sports in college can cause players to ruin their career, cause the NCAA to be one sided, and would take away scholarships. The first problem with paying college athletes is that it could ruin a college athlete’s future career. For example, what happens when you give a little kid money? They spend it on junk that they don’t need. So the same thing would happen with most young college athletes. Think about it, you’re giving a teenager straight out of high schools a bunch of money to come a play sports at your school. Teenagers are not responsible with money. A prime example of this happening is Josh Hamilton. Hamilton is a professional baseball player in the Major Leagues. He got drafted out of high school and signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Rays for nearly 4 million dollars. He got hooked up with the wrong people and ended up blowing all his money on drugs and tattoos. He even got kicked out of Major League baseball for a while. I think that this would happen to a lot of player in college if they got paid. Another problem with paying college athletes is that it will cause the NCAA to become one sided. It will make college sports just like professional sports. The colleges with the most money will have the best teams and the colleges with the least money will have the worst teams. The competition would disintegrate. Take a look at professional baseball for example. The highest paid team in the Majors is the New York Yankees, and they are also the best. The lowest paid team is the Kansas City Royals, and they are the worst team in baseball. New York has money to buy the best players out there, while the Royals don’t. They can’t get good players because of their budget. This is exactly what would happen if college athletes got paid. The college with the highest budget would get the best players in the country, while the college with the worst budget wouldn’t be able to get good players. This will make the same teams good and the same teams bad year in and year out. It would take all the competition away. The third and final reason that paying college athletes is a bad choice is that it would take away scholarships. Think about it, you are already paying college athletes to play by giving them scholarships. Why would you need to pay them more to play if they have a scholarship already? You wouldn’t. Which means that scholarships would be gone all together and that’s not fair to everyone else? What about the people that are non-athletes? They wouldn’t be able to get scholarships because they don’t play sports. This would cause the student population to decrease. Lots of people can’t afford to go to the colleges they go to. The only reason they can go is because scholarships allow them to. It’s not right to take away the opportunity for less fortunate people. So I think that paying college athletes is a bad idea. It could ruin a players career giving them a lot of money at a young age, like it almost did to Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers. It would also cause the NCAA to be uncompetitive and become exactly like the professional leagues. And lastly it would get rid of scholarships, which would take away opportunities of a lot of college students that are non-athletes Works Cited Chait, Jonathan. â€Å"Fixing College Sports: Why Paying Student Athletes Won’t Work† New York Magazine Mar.2012. Event Management Of Rio Carnival Festival

Event Management Of Rio Carnival Festival Introduction: The event selected in order to complete this piece of work is the Rio Carnival. This is one of the famous festivals and it is held before Lent and it is known as one of the biggest festival where the participant public is more than two million in numbers each day. The festival is one of the oldest one as well. Before going in to further detail of the event and covering the topic as of different required angles the researcher will give a brief account about event management and the advances which has taken place with the passage of time and introduction of latest technologies. (Getz, 2007) Life is full events that are not only interesting but full of attractions and adventure for the public. There has been a lot said and discussed and mostly one might find destinations under tremendous pressure as they are not sure how to deal by means of these events and save them as of becoming a touristic product. In the past, major events have been victim of different unwanted actions which has not only spoiled the image of the destination but in addition the fame of the event has been affected to a great extent. In the present world where technology through media has covered all the entertainment aspects for public and public can enjoy the event as of the confinement of their home just by sitting in front of their television sets, still the real joy is for live entertainment as public want to participate and be part of the colourful environment which cannot be captured or experienced through television no matter how good they are captured. A superior repeatable Event Management method offers an organization with the aptitude to sense Events, recognize them, and then choose on a suitable control commotion or action to avoid an occurrence and/or service disruption. Suitable activities or behaviours can comprise of an action to release an event or to trace an event. Well-organized service procedures base on the well-timed handling of the several activities essential to avoid confrontations and service outages. (Reisinger, 2009) As Event Management offers the capability to sense incidents before time, an association can configure technology to sustain an Event Management procedure to activate an event after it has been mechanically noticed and be automatically allocated to the suitable resolver faction for action before any definite service disruption or outage happens. Employing technology to sustain an Event Management procedure makes it probable for a few activities to be observed by exemption which can assist eradicate the requirement for costly and supply concentrated real time monitoring, whereas at the similar time, dropping unavailability or down time. Inside Event Management there are some altered kinds of events to handle which include: Normal Operation Events: These kinds of events can comprise an automatic announcement that a planned workload job has ended as usual or a consumer has logged into an appliance that they had the right point of admission to, or an email has attained an anticipated receiver. Standard process events are significant to observe since they might stand for a breach of policy or non observance to a development. (Richards et al., 2010) Exception Events: These kinds of events might comprise user endeavours to access an application with an wrong password too many times or, a devices CPU is above an acceptable utilization rate or a PC scan reveals the installation of unlawful software. (Reisinger, 2009) Unusual Events: These kinds of events typically represent something unexpected and require immediate notice such as server memory utilization within 5% of the highest expected performance level, or the conclusion time of a transaction 10% longer than normal. The key point with any of these event kinds is that instant action should occur in order to either raise an incident record or a dismiss and log of the event for further monitoring and trending. The Benefits of Event Management: By officially applying these key activities of an Event Management course, organizations are able to augment effective efficiencies by becoming more practical at managing operations that knowledge faults and service outages. In todays multifaceted IT environments, the degree of data being produced on a daily basis can be irresistible plus uncontrollable devoid of controlled and repeatable processes and the technology to support those processes. Millions of trades deals that rely on IT prop up are conducted every day. Devoid of an accepting of critical business processes, managing events turns out to be an unproductive best guess endeavour. (Getz, 2007) An outline of what the festival/event is: The carnival held once a year in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is the for the most part well-known party in the world, growing year-on-year and attracting hundreds of thousands of foreign as well as national tourists. In the week about festival 80% of the yearly consumption of beer is drunk plus 70% of the yearly tourist profits are composed, undoubtedly showing the significance of the event inexpensively? To Brazilians festival and dancing are as significant as football, which is really saying something! The roots of festival: The name carnival comes as of the Latin word carnelevare meaning abstinence as of the eating of meat and poultry. Carnival week is held to agree by means of the start of the Roman Catholic period of Lent, 40 days prior to Easter. Lent is conventionally a period of abstinence, prayer and self-evaluation for Christians and represents the 40 days that the Bible tells us Jesus spent in the desert resisting the temptations of Satan. As the dates for Easter vary each year so do those for the main carnival weekend. There are several parades and parties by plus following the main labelled events in the Sambodromo, some of which are free plus held in the street in various districts about the city or as practice weekends in the central site itself. (Dunne L et al., 2002) Carnival as a festivity of music, dancing, misbehaviour as well as extremes plus dates back to the ancient Roman carnival of Saturnalia which was introduced in 217 BC to lift the confidence of battle-weary Romans next overcomes by the Carthaginians. It was classically a week of eating, drinking as well as the deride turnaround of the communal order, slaves being given several further liberties for instance Several Roman Emperors such as Augustus and Caligula tried to shorten the festivities to 3 days but were met by means of such chaos plus were forced to depart the occupants to their social gathering. (Getz, 2007) Rio Carnival today: Even though Rio Carnival may not be the lone party in Brazil, is still expensive well-known. As far as the participants are considered, biggest carnival in terms of member is held in Recife in the North where in 2006 1.5 million people took part. The Rio event has developed repeatedly since its occurring back in the 17th Century furthermore every year it grows in size and more area and samba schools turn out to be mixed up in the spectacle. Blocos (Blocks) are tiny or middle sized congregation of musicians and dancers drawn as of neighbourhoods who parade with a challenging topic, motto and point. They could be clothed in matching T shirts or in extra excessive outfit and there are now over 100 Blocos, numerous of whom do not even go away as of their street or neighbourhood while displaying. Hundreds of local people congregate and escort them in their hard work. (Richards et al., 2010) Over deeply financed samba schools are huge groups of performers which participate in parade competitions in a particularly built Sambodromo. These schools procession held on the 4 major nights of the carnival, along with the title parade person held on the Saturday night. The official opposition can be alienated into 10 categories and a winner picked as of each distribution after being reconsidered on each of the following; drumming band, Samba song, Harmony, Flow and spirit, subject of the year, Overall impression, Floats and props, Costumes, Vanguard group and Flag bearer. There are 4 judges in each group and these people sit in booths along the parade route in the Sambodromo. Great standing is awarded to the winners and the rivalry is taken very critically with massive amounts of attempts, exercise and money invested. (Reisinger, 2009) Entrance tickets for the Sambodromo parades are awarded and as such are costly even in the low-priced bleacher seats which cost some hundred dollars. Places in the VIP boxes run to thousands of dollars as they offer the spectator much more ease and availability of facilities, open bar, 3 course dinner etc. for what is a lengthy of viewing. Tickets and some hotels frequently sell out months in advance so if you want to go ensure a longer way in advance. The stakeholders: Keeping in mind the nature of the event it turns out to be clear that the stakeholders are basically the tourists and local audiences that come as of everywhere to enjoy this event, its colour and the different parade and dances which are the very major part of this festival. (Bichou et al., 2007) Social-cultural benefits and issues linked with festival: The modern world is facing threats like terrorism and target killing and there are many parts of the world where the criminals wait for such mega events so that they can get a chance to cause damage on high scales. The damage can be anything like robbing, killing and even bomb blasts which are normally the key focus for terrorists in todays world. The community may always feel itself at risk during such programs and events as the ratio of crime is higher and its difficult to trace and control due to the size of event. Talking about benefits, festival like Rio brings business to the country and enables the foreigner to understand the culture of the native people. Not only does it attract people for long time but even in the four (Getz, 2007) What tourists might perceive as an attempt to get closer to the authentic and to break through to the back region, hosts will often perceive as a violation, an infringement on private and personal space, and these differing perceptions shape the power relations flanked by hosts and tourists. Just as objects are altered as they are placed in the front and false back regions, the hosts are alienated through their roles in the business: they become anders, someone other than what they once were. This view of how hosts and their culture are changed allows me to locate the central notion of authenticity in the critique of the tourism business in the works in my learning. The three authors portray tourism as making those who live and work in the business anders. Returning to the notion of front and back regions, then, I argue that the artists portray the genuine back region as a space that has been lost or is threatened by tourism, as it is gradually becomes anders and is turned into a false, staged back region. The learning depicts tourism and its impacts as a threat, implicitly noting a failure to protect the authenticity of the back region as of tourism. Discussion on how the festival event can help to foster cultural understanding There are many possible ways in the carnival may help in order to foster cultural understandings. The world has turns out to be small village and as a result people have turns out to be closer to each other with the help of Information technology. That is the main cause behind the fact that people want to know about each others culture values and beliefs as they find knowing about these cultural values very interesting. In order to get the cultural understandings events like The Rio Carnival plays a key role as not only the fact that its is very attractive but at the same time its one of the famous and big festival that automatically attracts the attention of people as of all over the world and they want to know about it, how it started and the other linked cultures with it. (Bichou et al., 2007) People as of all over the world as mentioned earlier fly to Brazil to enjoy this festival. This gives them opportunity to know about the local cultures and the different interesting facts that may be associated with these cultures which may vary after every hundred miles depending on the locals of the country and different cultural beliefs which they may possess. Recommendations for mitigating negative social and cultural impacts of the event festival Contemporary world faces some serious threats. These threats can be terrorism, robberies, killings and other issues. Terrorists are always in search of such festivals and social gatherings where the number of participants irrespective of the fact that they are performer or audience. This simply for the reason that the more big the gathering is the bigger will be the level of destruction which may be caused by these terrorists. Therefore, it turns out to be the responsibility of the event management team and the concerned authorities to make sure that all the available latest tools and other facilities like information technology and managements and security techniques are adopted in order to make sure that the event management is successful at the same time is safe as of any kind terrorist activity which may cause the loss of precious lives. (Getz, 2007) Conclusions: Considering the intricacies of IT organizations at present, there is a strong need of fine Event management practice and the requirement for technology enabled procedures is vital for best possible operational effectiveness. The purpose of an Event Management course is to perceive events of significant service factors and react instantly to direct those events. At present we want data gathered, concurrent, processed and then analyzed as much swiftly and correctly as possible. Effectiveness commence with prior preparation to get an idea that which services are essential and entail supervision along with usual reassess sessions to keep these rules clear, precise and applicable. (Reisinger, 2009) Technology contributes a great deal in enhancing the Event Management process by computerizing the real process actions themselves (for example event recognition, event announcement and automatic incident formation), and through analyzing the results as of some other associated procedures (such as Configuration Management). Incorporation with other practices (particularly Incident Management, crisis Management, Accessibility Management, Configuration Management and Service rank Management) is crucially significant to guarantee that events are handled efficiently and that the maximum levels of accessibility and service are kept. The Phonological Model of Dyslexia Essay examples -- Biology Essays Re

The Phonological Model of Dyslexia Doctor Morgan of Sussex, England, published the first case of what is now known as dyslexia in 1896. Dr. Morgan wrote about Percy F, a 14-year-old boy who was intelligent, bright, quick with learning games, and the intellectual equal of his peers. He fell behind, however, in his inability to learn how to read. Today, as in 1896, most people associate intelligence with the ability to read, but Percy F and the experience of millions of people with dyslexia breaks down the relationship between reading and intelligence (1). But, researchers were left with the question, "What causes dyslexia if intelligence is not the marker? The exact cause of dyslexia is unknown. However, researchers believe dyslexia is a reading disability with underlying genetic, developmental and neurological causes (8). People with dyslexia have trouble reading despite normal or high intelligence and exposure to sufficient language instruction. Specific reading problems apparent in dyslexia include reversal of words and letters, difficulty in pronouncing new words, difficulty in making a distinction between similarities and differences in words (on for no), and difficulty in discerning differences in letter sounds (ten, tin) (2). In order to understand the specific reading problems associated with dyslexia, it is important to know how the brain conceptualizes language. The brain recognizes language in a hierarchical order. The upper levels of the hierarchy deal with semantics (the meaning of words), syntax (grammatical structure), and discourse (connected sentences). The lowest levels of the hierarchy deal with breaking words into separate small units of sound called phonemes. Thus, before words can be comprehended ... ...and Biological Unity by Paulesu et al. , on the Science Magazine Online web site http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/291/5511/2165 7) Dyslexia: Same Brains, Different Languages by Laura Helmuth , on the Science Magazine Online web site http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/291/5511/2064?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&titleabstract=Dyslexia&searched=QID_NOT_SET&stored_search=&FIRSTINDEX=&fdate=10/1/ 8) Fact Sheet: Dyslexia , on the Learning Disabilities Association web site http://www.ldanatl.org/factsheets/Dyslexia.shtml 9) Beginning Reading And Phonological Awareness For Students With Learning Disabilities by Michael M. Visual Aids

Visual Aids Visual aids help your presentation make things happen. Visual aids help you reach your objectives by providing emphasis to whatever is being said. Clear pictures multiply the audience’s level of understanding of the material presented, and they should be used to reinforce your message, clarify points, and create excitement. Visual aids involve your audience and require a change from one activity to another: from hearing to seeing. When you use visual aids, their use tends to encourage gestures and movement on your part. This extra movement reinforces the control that you, the speaker, need over the presentation. The use of visual aids, then, are mutual beneficial to the audience and you. Visual aids add impact and interest to a presentation. They enable you to appeal to more than one sense at the same time, thereby increasing the audience’s understanding and retention level. With pictures, the concepts or ideas you present are no longer simply words, but word s plus images. When preparing your visual aids you should include a clear, brief, heading on each slide or page.Use bullet or short phrases to complement your heading. Do not use sentences or entire paragraphs unless you plan to read them out loud, your audience will want to read what you show them. Avoid using all capital letters except in headings. Whether you use slides, overhead transparencies, flipcharts, models, photographs or drawings, keep visual aids simple: no more than three or four key points on each item. Its better to have a few extra slides than a lost audience. In preparing tables and charts for projection, limit data to key points. Include only columns, rows or plots that you plan to discuss.Leave details and more comprehensive data summaries for your written paper or a separate handout. Leave plenty of white space or other background color to make your visuals easier to read. Check spelling and your slides’ readability by printing them on standard-sized pape r. Then as a quick check to determine whether they can be read from the back of a room, place the printed sheets on the floor to see if you can read them while standing up. If you use overheads, refrain from marking them with hand-written additions before your talk. When presenting your speech with visual aids, the presenters may be tempted to hide behind their visual aids.It is important not to do that, you must be proud of your visual aid and you should be the center of attention not your visual aid. (Centre for Teaching Excellence)(1) Whether you are creating a visual aid by hand or designing them on a computer, there are six basic guidelines you should follow to make your aids clear and visually appealing. They are: Prepare visual aids in advance, Keep visual aids simple, Make sure visual aids are large enough, Use fonts that are easy to read, Use a limited number of fonts, and Use color effectively. Lucas 275-278)(2) If you go by these guidelines when preparing your visual aids , you will capture the audience’s attention and be proud of what you accomplished with your visual aid. Visual aids are eye-catchers. They need to be used appropriately and moderately to be affective. Different types of visual aids emphasize different data relationships, so choosing the right type is very important. Think about your data, consider your purpose, and decide which type best illustrates your point. Use caution when considering using illustrations, however, as they ten to captivate an audience’s attention perhaps distracting from your point.Once you have chosen and created your visual aid, you’ll need to revise it for clarity, simplicity, and style. (Austin)(3) Visual aids involve your audience and require a change from one activity to another: from hearing to seeing. They add impact and interest to a presentation. They enable you to appeal to more than one sense at the same time, thereby increasing the audience’s understanding and retention l evel. With pictures, the concepts or ideas you present are no longer simply words, but words plus images. The use of visual aids is important to all presentations.Without them, the impact of your presentation may leave the audience shortly after the audience leaves you. By preparing a presentation with visual aids that reinforce your main ideas, you will reach your audience far more effectively, and perhaps, continue to touch them long after the presentation ends. (Labor)(4) Insight Statement: While writing this paper, I learned many things about how to prepare a visual aid and some tips on what/what not to do when presenting them. The meaning of visual aids to me is that the audience grasps and understands a speech when they have something to look at, that clarifies the speech for them.Works Cited (3) Austin, University of Texas at. Huckleberry Finn, The Shore and the Rafts Symbols essays

Huckleberry Finn, The Shore and the Rafts Symbols essays Theirs not a thing in the world that can relate to how it feels to be free, with no worries, nothing that can bother you, while the sun sets, the sky turns to a color that your eyes selfishly gaze at, because your free for that one moment. But we all no that having no worries is just a fantasy, theirs always that thing that makes life become so tense that you would risk anything to get away. In The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain shows symbolism within the shore, and the river that relates to the mood of life. It helps show the choice a person makes to show the direction their life is going. What I mean by that I will explain. Huckleberry Finn Is a pretty easygoing type of guy, he really doesnt have many cares, not about appearance, or speech, or how civilized he really is. Huck is a very adventure bound person, always looking for the lost treasure. This is just the type of person Huck is. When Huck is on the raft floating down stream with Jim, its like your back in 1st grade. 1 you aint gotta talk properly, 2. You dont have to worry about why your doing things, you just do them, 3. Everything is fun, nothing remotely relates to work of any kind. This is why I believe Twain uses the river to symbolize the easygoing side of life, the side where all worries are washed away, and the act of being civilized isnt even real. The life on the river was an enjoyable time, never a worry, mostly always an adventure. Like when they first got on the raft in the early part of the book, it was to get away form the evil on shore. Huck was running away form his dad and had to get away somehow. Basically the raft ride was an adventure, they traveled all the way down the river, ran into the bad guys, you no, the average adventure story. Like when Jim and Huck found all the items on the mysterious raft, and how they were going to make a living on the raft, ...

Resist the Atomic Menace essays

Resist the Atomic Menace essays There are currently 110 working nuclear power plants in the United States today. The government claims that out of twenty-two years of operation, there has only been one mishap in the United States involving nuclear reactors, Three Mile Island located on an island 10 miles south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Yet core meltdowns have been known to occur at several reactor sites, including the Experimental Breeder Reactor in Idaho Falls, Idaho; Westinghouse Testing Reactor, in Waltz Mill, Pennsylvania; Stationary Low Power Reactor, in Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Fermi 1, in Lagoona Beach, Michigan (Against Nuclear Power). Since the near catastrophe at Three Mile Island in 1979, an exploration of government records revealed that there have been more than 23,000 mishaps at nuclear plants in the United States (Against Nuclear Power), an ever-increasing number. Plain and simple, nuclear power plants are dangerous. And despite their obvious drawbacks, the government still continues to offer billions of dollars in subsidies, money that could be put towards researching renewable sources of energy. One of the biggest problems with nuclear power is the potential for an accident. Contained inside a nuclear reactor are several pounds of radioactive material (including but not limited to radium, thorium, uranium, or plutonium), thousands of gallons of contaminated water, and other radioactive refuge. There are a variety of accidents that can occur involving nuclear power and its key ingredients. Most notable is the potential for a core meltdown. As was the case with Three Mile Island, an automated valve in the Unit 2 reactor was shut-off due to a mechanical or electrical error, thus preventing the flow of water and removal of heat responsible for cooling the core (The Meltdown). When the system should have automatically shutdown, it did not. The ensuing loss of coolant t ...

China essayEssay Writing Service

China essayEssay Writing Service China essay China essayThe Chinese economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In this regard, the competitive position of the Chinese economy depends on multiple factors, while its stable development and steady growth is very important for the enhancement of the competitive position of the Chinese economy in the global market. In this respect, the accounting balance of China and the national currency exchange rate affect consistently the economic development of China and the stability of the national financial markets and economy at large. At the moment, the Chinese economy keeps growing, in spite of negative effects of the global financial crisis which stroke in 2008. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the global financial crisis has had a negative impact on the Chinese economy too but still the crisis has never stopped the growth of the economy of China. Instead, the Chinese economy still keeps growing, while the rest of the world struggles for the stabiliza tion of their economies and accelerated recovery after the economic downturn in 2008. The positive accounting payment balance is still positive for the development of the Chinese economy and China keeps growing taking ever stronger position in the global market. the accounting payment balance allow China to maintain the surplus of export over import so far and the national currency, Chinese Yuan, responds to the economic development and payment balance of China enhancing its position along with the enhancement of the accounting payment balance of the Chinese economy. The accounting payment balance of China mirrors the development of Chinese economy and its structure. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the development of Chinese economy was characterized by the fast growth in the early 2000s, when the growth of the Chinese economy was high and China increased its export substantially. At this point, it is possible to refer to the following graph which mirrors the deve lopment of the accounting payment balance of China in 2005-2012.China’s once huge, but declining surplus on goods dominates the current account. Services trade has been regularly in a small deficit and flows of income swing between deficit and surplus over time. All of these surpluses and deficits must have counterparts in the rest of the world. China’s surplus on goods trade means an equally sized deficit among its trading partners, particularly the US (Park, 2009).At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the growth of the Chinese economy was driven by the growth of the goods’ production mainly. The increase of the goods’ production contributed to the substantial growth of the export of Chinese companies and laid the foundation to the stable economic growth of China within the last decade. At the same time, it is possible to trace certain changes in the accounting payment balance of China. To put it more precisely, the goods’ production comprised the large share in the total economic development of China but, in recent years, the production of goods has decreased its share in the total accounting balance compared to previous years. At the same time, the share of services in the total production and in the accounting balance of China has increased by the early 2010s. Such a change was determined by the increased role of services in the contemporary economic development. In such a situation, China increased the production and export of services that compensated the decreased share of the goods’ production and export. On the other hand, it is worth mentioning the fact that the rise of the service production in China and the increase of services share in the account balance of China was the result of the abundant investments and development of high tech industries in China (Wei, 2009). China invested substantial funds into the research and development and encouraged local companies as well as foreign direct inve stors to develop the highly technological production. The progress of technology and the development of the highly technological production contributed to the creation of the larger share of services production in the account balance of the country.Furthermore, another important trend is the drop of the net transfers in the current account share of China by the early 2010. In this regard, the situation was quite different in the mid-2000s, when the net transfers comprised a large share of the account balance of China ranked second largest after the goods production. Currently, the net transfers have dropped their share in the current account balance of China being outpaced by the services production. In such a way, today, services play increasingly more important part in the economic development of China, while net transfers start losing their position. On the other hand, the goods’ production still comprises the core of the Chinese economy and lays the foundation to the stea dy growth of China in economic terms. Also, it is worth mentioning the income balance of China which was unstable during the last decade. Today, the income balance has become relatively stable and foreseeable. At any rate, experts (Rodrick, 2012) believe in the stable and steady growth of the Chinese economy and its accounting balance. Therefore, China has a considerable potential taking into consideration its current economic development and the steady economic growth, whereas other countries of the world suffer from the steady or steep economic decline depending on the impact of the global financial crisis of 2008 on their economies (Wu, 2013).The following graph shows the balance of payment current account and capital and financial accounts. The sum of the vertical bars is the total surplus of supply of foreign exchange over demand. Left to the market, that would have pushed up the renminbi, possibly 20-30% on some estimates, choking off Chinese exporters’ competitiveness an d pushing down the trade balance. This is what critics abroad, notably in the US, mean by currency manipulation, implying that China has rigged the trade market in its favor by keeping its currency at an unfairly low level. The chart shows that the current account surplus has been falling but so has the capital account surplus. The State Administration of Foreign Exchange recently revised down its estimate of the capital account deficit for the second quarter but the downward trend is still marked. If China’s trade surplus keeps shrinking, because of weak demand in rich countries suffering recession or slow growth, and capital is now flowing out of China, then the net balance could become sharply negative (Gao, 2012).Then the central bank, the People’s Bank of China, would have to choose either to use its reserves to fill the gap, keeping the renminbi up, or to let market forces push the currency down. Slowing growth in China is likely to cut its imports, so that the tr ade surplus may grow again. But the days of dramatically rising foreign exchange reserves are over for the moment (Rolf, 2012).The capital account is the sum of long term and relatively stable flows such as foreign direct investment, (FDI, foreign companies buying assets in China and building new factories), and more short term, volatile flows known as â€Å"hot money†. Although China restricts such flows it is very hard to block them completely. FDI remains strongly positive into China. It is widely suspected  that the reversal in the capital account reflects the movement abroad of money by the Chinese rich, ahead of the change in government next month and the associated uncertainty. If the new regime appears stable and calm, perhaps some of this money will return. But if not, the outflow could accelerate, which will put pressure on the renminbi exchange rate. At least that would stop the Americans complaining about unfair trade (So, Lin, Poston, 2012).At this point, the widening gap between the accounting balance and capital and financial account balance is quite disturbing because hypothetically there is a risk of the further ungrounded growth of Chinese financial markets based on great positive expectations which are not backed up by the capital that is available or invested into the Chinese economy. The persisting disparity between the account balance and the capital and financial account balance threaten to create the bubble in the Chinese economy which was similar to the housing bubble in the housing market of the US in 2007-2008, when the US faced a severe economic crisis and the steep decline of the domestic economy comparable to the Great Depression of the 1930s.China essay   part  2

Geology & Tectonics of the Himalayan Mountains Essay

Geology & Tectonics of the Himalayan Mountains - Essay Example The Himalayas are mountain range in asia separating the indian sub continent and tibetan plateau. The meaning of the word Himalaya in sanskrit is "abode of the snow." The geology of the Himalayan mountain is the most dramatic and creation of modern plate tectonic forces. The Himalayas are a result of orogeny which is a result of a collison between two continental tectonic plates. They are formed due to the denudation processes of weathering and erosion. The Himalayas supplies water for more than one-fifth of the world population and accounts for a quarter of the global sedimentary budget. Himalayas stretch 2,900 km along the border between India and Tibet. With the collision of two large landmasses, India and Eurasia, driven by the plate movement, collided; this mountain began to form between 40 and 50 million years ago. As both the landmasses have the same rock density, one plate could not be subducted under the other. Thus the pressure of these plates started forming the Himalayan peaks. The Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau to the north have risen very rapidly. In just 50 million years, Mt. Everest has risen to height of more than 9 km. The Himalayas continue to rise more than 1 cm a year -- a growth rate of 10 km in a million years. If that is the case, the Himalayas should be even higher. This made scientists to believe that Eurasian Plate may now be stretching out rather than thrusting up, and such stretching would result in some subsidence due to gravity. Tectonics of Himalayas: The most important property of the Himalayan orogen is its growth laterally. The Himalayan region is divided into four tectonic units for the convenience and better understanding. 1) The sub Himalaya forms the foothills of the Himalayan range and is composed of Miocene and Pleistocene molassic sediments derived from the erosion of Himalaya. The subhimalyan region consist of the quarternery alluvium depsited by the rivers coming from the Himalayas. This explains that the Himalaya is still a young and active orogen. 2) The Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cenozoic Detrital Sediments from the passive Indian margin forms the Lesser Himalaya. These sediments are formed byintercalated with some granites and acid volcanics (1840 70 Ma, Frank et al., 1977). These low-grade sediments are thrust over the SubHimalaya along the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). The Lesser Himalaya often appears in tectonic windows (Kishtwar or Larji-Kulu-Rampur windows) within the High Himalaya Crystalline Sequence. 3) The Central Himalayan Domain, CHD (or High Himalaya) forms the backbone of the Himalayan orogen and encompasses the areas with the highest topographical relief. It is commonly separated into four zones. a. The High Himalayan Crystalline Sequence, HHCS is a 30 km thick, medium- to high-grade metamorphic sequence of metasedimentary rocks which are frequently intruded by granites of Ordovician ( 500 Ma) and Lower Miocene ( 22 Ma) age. b. The Tethys Himalaya, TH is an approximately 100 km large synclinorium formed by strongly folded and imbricated, weakly metamorphosed sedimentary series. c. The Nyimaling-Tso Morari Metamorphic Dome, NTMD: In the Ladakh region, the Tethys Himalaya synclinorium passes gradually to the north in a large dome of greenshist to eclogitic metamorphic rocks. As with the HHCS, these metamorphic rocks represent the metamorphic equivalent of the sediments forming the base of the Tethys Himalay

Internet Privacy --private individual Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Internet Privacy --private individual - Essay Example At any rate, it is important for people today to have Internet access to gain an advantage in their lives and perform better at work. However, a consequent and perhaps inevitable problem with this increased Internet usage is the issue of Internet security. Hacking is a persistent problem these days, in addition to malware or harmful viruses spread over the Internet that destroys files or programs, but the problem of hacking has gained big proportions due to its seriousness. Many people have suffered untold misery due to their sensitive personal information getting hacked like in cases of identity theft. Sensitive personal data are stolen and used maliciously by some individuals who have no qualms about destroying the lives of other people. In this regard, this paper discusses and tackles the important issues involved in Internet privacy of individuals. a) Background – the rapid spread of Internet use due to lower broadband connections had led to problems regarding the issue of privacy and security in the Web space (Hora, 2008:91). Incidents of identity thefts are on the rise, despite the development in Internet security Style and modus of Internet hackers had also evolved markedly (Poulsen, 2012:5). Rise of Internet-enabled transactions such as Web 2.0 increased hacking opportunities People need to be more aware and better educated on how to protect themselves while online against malicious software and equally malicious people out to get their data b) Thesis – people can better protect themselves if they are made aware of the dangers of data falling into the wrong hands, especially in the sensitive areas on their personal lives such as banking, personal communications, school records, and finally, confidential medical records. Awareness of the security risks enables people to take certain precautionary measures while they are on-line to protect against cyber-criminals. Among the more common crimes are on identity theft, digital piracy of copyrigh ted works (songs, films, books, etc.), pornography, in human trafficking, illegal drugs on sale, illicit firearms sold, and Internet gambling syndicates (Jaishankar, 2011:53). However, a focus of this paper is on banking-related on-line crimes causing at least 60% of all Internet crimes in terms of costs (Crescenzo & Rubin, 2006:36). Discussion (Main body) The bulk of Internet crimes are those related to financial transactions, such as those using the new digital technologies to transmit and receive monetary credits to bank accounts. Experts are of the opinion most of these crimes were committed by insiders, or people who had the needed access to penetrate the security barriers because they are authorized to do so. a) Emerging technologies - encourage more people to do their financial transactions on-line. E-services are now more prevalent than ever with new Web sites put up everyday Mobile commerce transactions are also on the rise due to new mobile applications Cyber payment syste ms now allow people to pay bills on-line faster and conveniently Digital banking (both mobile and Internet-based) allow people to move their funds b) Digital presence with existence of a Web site –
